James Agalga, MP for Builsa North, has officially assumed the role of Majority Leader in Ghana’s 9th Parliament. His appointment follows the nomination of his predecessor, Mahama Ayariga, as the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs. This marks the third change in majority leadership since the inauguration of the 9th Parliament on January 7, 2025, following the tenures of Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and Mahama Ayariga. Agalga has pledged a leadership style defined by consultation and consensus-building to advance President John Mahama’s "Reset Agenda."
The frequent turnover in leadership within 20 months signals a strategic realignment by the NDC as it seeks to maintain legislative discipline in a closely divided House.
Parliament has approved the nominations of Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko-Essah, Justice Edward Amoako Asante, and Anthony Forson Jnr to the Supreme Court. The process was marked by a walkout from the Minority Caucus, who protested the expedited four-day vetting schedule, claiming it provided insufficient time for public scrutiny. Simultaneously, the House unanimously approved the ministerial appointments of Mahama Ayariga (Local Government) and Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings (Environment, Science, and Technology).
The Minority, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, cited standing orders requiring a 14-day notice for vetting. The approvals facilitate President Mahama's goal of judicial modernization and a more aggressive fight against illegal mining (galamsey).
Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine has inaugurated an 11-member committee chaired by Marietta Brew to transform 1992 Charter reform recommendations into legislation. Activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor has been appointed as Secretary to the committee. The group is tasked with developing a framework for proposals concerning presidential terms and parliamentary size, potentially leading to a national referendum during the 2027 district assembly elections.
The inclusion of #FixTheCountry co-founder Barker-Vormawor suggests an attempt by the Mahama administration to include grassroots activists in high-level technocratic processes.
NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia detailed the strategic motivations behind Ghana’s gold-backed economic initiatives. He revealed that the Domestic Gold Purchase program allowed the Bank of Ghana to accumulate approximately $5 billion in gold reserves over two years. This strengthened position reportedly allowed for the lifting of IMF-imposed forex restrictions in January 2025, enabling the central bank to increase market support from $80 million to $1 billion per month to stabilize the cedi.
Bawumia proposed a Minerals Development Bank to formalize small-scale mining, which contributes over 52% of Ghana's total gold production. This signals a potential shift toward a more structured, credit-accessible extractive sector.
President Mahama has inaugurated the steering committee for the GHc1 billion (~$89.03 million USD) Bawku Revitalisation Fund, chaired by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson. The administration also opened the Northshore Apparel Hub in Savelugu, which is projected to create 30,000 jobs. Additionally, the President broke ground for a seven-storey expansion at Accra International Airport to accommodate 2.5 million annual passengers and announced duty-free status for aircraft spare parts.
The 'Bawku Fund' attempts to use economic investment as a peace-building tool in a region long-hampered by conflict. For the apparel hub, the goal is to curb north-south migration by providing industrial jobs locally.
The Bawku conflict is a decades-long chieftaincy and ethnic dispute. Restoration of the commercial hub is dependent on maintained security.
Roads Minister Governs Agbodza has announced a shift to a 'build-maintain-preserve' model for the $10 billion 'Big Push' infrastructure program. To fund maintenance, the government is reintroducing electronic road tolls. Simultaneously, the GHc598 million (~$53.24 million USD) Volta Electrification project has been launched to bring power to 206 communities.
At the current exchange rate of GHc11.23 per dollar, large-scale infrastructure projects are creating significant domestic demand for materials. Watch for upcoming electronic tolling contracts as potential investment entries into the transport sector.
Water supply has been disrupted in Mallam, Darkuman, Kaneshie, Mataheko, and Korle Bu after a 500mm-diameter main pipeline was damaged by a private contractor during excavation for storm drains. Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) engineers are currently dewatering flooded trenches to begin repairs.
No specific restoration timeline has been given. Residents in the western corridor should secure alternative sources for the next 48-72 hours.
Police in Daboya have arrested 25-year-old Adjei Abdulai and 22-year-old Issah Mahama following the lynching of a man identified as Yibonwura. The victim was accused of stealing shea nuts. Graphic footage of the attack circulated on social media, aiding the police in identifying the suspects.

The death of 31-year-old Theresa Boakye Dua following a Caesarean section at Greater Accra Regional (Ridge) Hospital has led to accusations of gross negligence. The Ministry of Health reported nearly 965 institutional maternal deaths in 2025, sparking calls for a bipartisan parliamentary probe.
Ghana's maternal mortality rate remains high at 235 per 100,000 live births. While KATH in Kumasi recently saw its first decline in deaths in a decade, the Ridge Hospital tragedy highlights ongoing discipline issues in the health sector.
Asante Kotoko defeated Accra Hearts of Oak 4-1 on penalties following a 0-0 draw at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. The match, officiated by referee and immigration officer Charles Bulu, was a high-profile exhibition of the nation's democratic values ahead of the new season.
The 21-year-old defender has completed a –•2 million (~$2.2 million USD) move from Granada to Real Madrid. Naasei, who recently received a Black Stars call-up, will initially join the Real Madrid Castilla development squad.
Black Stars context: Naasei is viewed as a future pillar for the national team defense ahead of the 2027 AFCON and World Cup cycles.
