The 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) has intensified as academic heavyweights and dark horses battle for quarterfinal slots and the coveted seeded status. In recent fixtures, Achimota School displayed clinical precision to dominate their regional rivals, while Boa Amponsem SHS and University Practice SHS relied on late-stage heroics to advance in their respective matches. Produced by Primetime Limited and supported by the Ghana Education Service, these contests continue to highlight the high academic standards and intense competitive spirit of Ghana's secondary schools.
In a commanding performance, Achimota School asserted their dominance in an all-Accra contest, finishing with 56 points to retain their seeded status and secure a spot in the quarterfinals. The "Motown" representatives maintained a comfortable lead throughout the rounds, leaving Accra Girls’ SHS and Accra High School trailing with 40 and 28 points, respectively. Despite a few correct answers from their opponents in the Problem of the Day, Achimota’s consistent accuracy allowed them to extend their advantage and solidify their reputation as perennial contenders in the national competition.
The tournament also witnessed heart-wrenching finishes, most notably in the clash involving University Practice SHS. Overturning a five-point deficit in the final round, University Practice secured a narrow 44-43 victory over Presby SHS, Adeiso. By solving two of the four riddles in the final moments, they managed to retain their seed, while Adiembra SHS’s intervention in the final riddle effectively blocked Presby’s path to recovery. In another upset, Boa Amponsem SHS pulled off a late-round surge to unseed Abetifi Presby SHS. In a tight race where Nsutaman Catholic SHS led early on, Boa Amponsem finished with 38 points, edging out Nsutaman’s 35 and Abetifi Presby’s 30.
These results set the stage for a high-octane quarterfinal round, where Boa Amponsem SHS is now slated to face a formidable challenge against Achimota School and Adisadel College. As the tournament progresses, the importance of tactical speed in the riddle rounds has become increasingly evident, with single points deciding the fate of many top-tier schools. Broadcast on JoyNews and supported by various corporate sponsors, the NSMQ continues to serve as the premier platform for academic excellence in Ghana, promising more intellectual brilliance in the upcoming fixtures.
