Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has confirmed that the appointment of a new head coach for the Black Stars is nearly complete, with an official announcement expected ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The search follows the departure of Carlos Queiroz, whose tenure ended after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. While initial reports suggested negotiations were underway to retain Queiroz, Okraku clarified that talks for a contract extension ultimately fell through. The GFA president revealed that the incoming coach is "99% secured" and is already working behind the scenes to prepare the squad for their next assignments.
Okraku remains optimistic about the team's trajectory, asserting that the Black Stars have successfully overcome the "psychological block" and hurdles that hindered previous campaigns. He highlighted the team's performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup—where Ghana finished 24th despite being the lowest-ranked nation—as evidence of improved organization and youthful confidence. This renewed spirit will be tested early in the AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign, where Ghana has been drawn into a challenging Group C alongside Somalia, The Gambia, and the reigning African champions, Côte d’Ivoire.
Addressing the rivalry with Côte d’Ivoire, Okraku noted that the neighboring nation's recent AFCON success was partially facilitated by errors made by the Black Stars during the tournament. However, he expressed confidence that the current squad's competitive evolution will lead to an "interesting" and hard-fought clash when the two sides meet. Beyond the senior national team, the GFA is also focusing on domestic reforms. Executive Council member Frederick Acheampong recently emphasized a strategic rethink to revive fan attendance in the Ghana Premier League, citing a need to bridge the disconnect between local clubs and their host communities.
As the GFA prepares for the upcoming qualifying matches, internal politics are also taking center stage. The upcoming GFA presidential election is expected to be a landmark event, with Kurt Okraku potentially seeking a third term. Speculation is mounting regarding a challenge from former Black Stars captain André Ayew, a development that could signal a significant shift in the administration of Ghanaian football. For now, the GFA's primary focus remains the formalization of the new technical leadership to ensure the Black Stars are fully prepared for the road to AFCON 2027.
