Local authorities in the Volta Region have unveiled significant measures to bolster educational infrastructure and access. In Ho, the Municipal Assembly has announced plans to establish the first public College of Education in the Hodzo community, while in Ketu North, Member of Parliament Eric Edem Agbana has successfully addressed furniture shortages across all Senior High Schools (SHS) in the municipality. These initiatives represent a coordinated effort to transform the region into a center for quality education and human resource development.
Speaking during a stakeholder accountability session, Ho Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Stephen Adom revealed that the proposed College of Education at Hodzo is designed to expand access to teacher training for local youth. The project is a core component of the Assembly's strategy to enhance educational development within the municipality. Mr. Adom emphasized that the institution would not only serve as a hub for academic excellence but also create various socio-economic opportunities for the surrounding communities.
The announcement has been met with support from traditional authorities, though they have linked the college's success to broader infrastructure needs. Togbe Agbolosu VII, speaking on behalf of the local leadership, expressed gratitude for the government's intervention while stressing the urgent need for improved road networks. He noted that reliable road infrastructure is vital for the successful operation of the new college and is necessary to ensure that students and staff can commute safely and efficiently.
Simultaneously, in the Ketu North Constituency, MP Eric Edem Agbana has delivered 4,000 mono desks to eliminate the furniture deficit in the municipality’s four Senior High Schools. The provision, funded through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), aims to create a more conducive learning environment by ensuring every student has a comfortable place to study. Mr. Agbana highlighted that decent furniture is a fundamental prerequisite for effective teaching and learning, noting that the initiative has already brought relief to thousands of students.
Looking ahead, Mr. Agbana has pledged to extend these efforts to basic schools within the constituency. He committed to a long-term goal of ensuring that every schoolchild in Ketu North has access to a proper desk by 2028. This comprehensive approach to tackling infrastructure deficits, combined with the expansion of tertiary institutions in Ho, signals a robust period of growth for the education sector in the Volta Region as officials work to meet the needs of a growing student population.
