Hiplife artiste Belinda Nana Ekua Amoah, popularly known as MzBel, has officially launched the Afro Essence Village in Gbawe, Accra, marking a significant transition in her career toward cultural advocacy. The new creative hub is a transformation of her former BelKids Playground, repurposed to serve as a sanctuary for the celebration and promotion of Ghanaian art and culture. By establishing this center, MzBel aims to provide a dedicated space where both locals and international visitors can experience the nation's rich traditions firsthand.
The Afro Essence Village is designed to function as a living museum and creative incubator. MzBel’s vision for the space includes a strong educational component, integrating traditional drumming and dance classes specifically for children to ensure that the younger generation remains connected to their ancestral roots. Furthermore, the village serves as a permanent gallery for various artists to showcase sculptures, artefacts, and other creative works, fostering a community of creators and providing them with a visible platform to engage with the public.
Addressing public discourse surrounding the venue, the artist has firmly rebutted claims that the village promotes "juju" or occult practices. These rumors, sparked by the presence of traditional sculptures and indigenous artefacts, were met with MzBel's clarification that the aesthetic is a deliberate tribute to Ghana’s historical identity. She emphasized that the hub is about reclaiming and honoring cultural symbols that are often misunderstood, urging the public to view the displays as essential pieces of national heritage rather than through a lens of superstition.
Looking ahead, MzBel intends to position Gbawe as a primary cultural hotspot within the Greater Accra Region, leveraging her influence in the entertainment industry to bolster the local creative economy. The launch of Afro Essence Village represents a long-term commitment to legacy-building, focusing on the preservation of Ghanaian identity and the promotion of cultural tourism. By creating this hub, the artiste seeks to provide a lasting contribution to the arts that will benefit both the creative community and the general public for years to come.
