The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially begun vetting 47 aspirants for national executive positions, a vital step in the party’s reorganization following the 2024 elections. Key figures like Paul Afoko and Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko have appeared before the committee, with elections set for October 3, 2026. Simultaneously, the 9th Parliament has seen a leadership reshuffle: James Agalga (MP for Builsa North) is the new Majority Leader, succeeding Mahama Ayariga, who transitioned to the Ministry of Local Government.
These internal shifts define the political strategies of both major parties as they prepare for the 2028 cycle and manage the current legislative agenda.
President John Mahama, inaugurated in January 2025, currently leads the NDC government. The NPP's reorganization is a direct response to their transition into the minority caucus.
Parliament is currently vetting Supreme Court nominees, including Justice Anthony Forson Jnr and Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko Essah. This occurs as the judiciary clears the path for the trial of Solomon Asamoah, former GIIF CEO, regarding an unauthorized $2 million USD payment for the stalled Skytrain project. The Supreme Court recently dismissed an application to halt the High Court proceedings, with the defense set to be heard on September 23, 2026.
The Skytrain case is a high-profile test of the new administration's commitment to accountability regarding previous infrastructure expenditures.
The defense testimony on September 23 will likely reveal internal decision-making processes regarding major public-private partnerships.
Assuming her role as Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has vowed a multi-sectoral crackdown on illegal mining (galamsey). Her tenure begins as the Minerals Commission designates 13 geologically studied 'blocked-out' areas for licensed small-scale miners to prevent speculative and destructive mining in water bodies.
Formalizing the mining sector is critical to Ghana's environmental recovery and stabilizing the cedi through official gold reserves.
Galamsey (illegal small-scale mining) has devastated major rivers like the Pra and Birim, leading to high water treatment costs and agricultural land loss.
After four years of losses, Ghana’s State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) reported a consolidated net profit of GHc19.8 billion (~$1.77 billion USD) for the 2025 financial year. Total revenue jumped 28% to GHc176.43 billion (~$15.75 billion USD). However, the report highlights concentrated risks, as the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) carries liabilities of GHc82.31 billion (~$7.35 billion USD), representing nearly 30% of total sector debt.
While the turnaround is positive, much of the profit stems from foreign exchange gains rather than operational efficiency, masking ongoing debt crises in the energy sector.
Monitor the proposed liquidation of the Ghana Railway Company and the restructuring of ECG's debt as indicators of long-term fiscal stability.
The 24-Hour Economy Secretariat has finalized a $270 million USD agreement with Agrium Capital and other partners to revitalize Ghana's poultry sector, aiming to reduce the $400 million USD annual chicken import bill. Separately, the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) returned to profitability with a net gain of GHc5.11 billion (~$456 million USD) for 2025 following a surge in operating revenue.
Reducing import dependency in poultry and stabilizing cocoa earnings are central pillars of the government's export-led growth strategy.
Opportunities for investment in integrated poultry value chains (feed, hatcheries, processing) are expanding under the current industrialization incentives.
Petroleum consumers face a rise in pump prices starting September 1, with petrol projected to reach between GHc16.21 (~$1.45 USD) and GHc16.39 (~$1.46 USD) per litre. To mitigate the impact, the government has extended a GHc2 (~$0.18 USD) per litre reduction in the regulatory margin on diesel, keeping prices around GHc17 (~$1.52 USD) per litre.
Higher fuel costs directly drive transport fare increases, impacting food prices and general inflation.
The price hikes are driven by international crude oil reaching $92 per barrel, despite a relatively stable cedi at GHc11.20 to the dollar.
Tragedy struck the Atiwa East District as seven miners died in a pit collapse at Asaman Tamfoe. Emergency services have concluded the rescue operation and launched a probe. Meanwhile, in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional Police dismantled a major robbery syndicate, arresting six suspects, including a technician specialized in unlocking stolen mobile devices.
The ongoing investigation into the Asaman Tamfoe site's legality may lead to further arrests in the district's mining administration.
The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) seized a large quantity of unregistered 'Cigarette Rod Lollipops' in Accra. The authority warned that the candy mimics smoking behaviors for children and violates the Public Health Act.
The FDA is tightening market surveillance against deceptive marketing and unregistered imports targeting minors.

Black Stars context: Karikari’s prolific form in Serbia may earn him a look from national team selectors ahead of the next round of qualifiers.
Coach Charles Sampson has named his 21-member squad for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland. The team will be without three key players, including captain Linda, due to ACL injuries. Ghana faces Ecuador in their opener on September 6.
