President John Dramani Mahama has returned to Accra after participating in the 21st Extraordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly in Luanda, Angola. During the summit, the President emphasized that the complexity of modern conflicts requires predictable, African-owned resources, and he strongly endorsed the implementation of a 0.2% import levy to reach the AU Peace Fund target of $1 billion. He also welcomed UN Resolution 2719, which provides a framework for financing AU-led peace operations through UN-assessed contributions, provided there is clear African ownership and accountability.
This signals a strategic shift in Ghana's foreign policy toward reducing aid dependency for regional security. Predictable funding could stabilize the Sahel and West African regions, which is critical for Ghana's own border security and domestic economic stability.
President Mahama currently oversees a high-level security apparatus that includes Special Envoys to the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), reflecting Ghana's leadership role in managing regional extremist threats.
Ghana is mourning the loss of Ibrahim Adam, a professional animal scientist and former Minister for Food and Agriculture under the Rawlings administration. Adam, who also served as the Member of Parliament for Choggu/Tishigu and Board Chairman of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), was a pivotal figure in shaping Ghana’s post-independence agricultural landscape. Tributes from across the political divide have highlighted his role as a mentor to current agricultural leaders.
Ibrahim Adam served during the 1990s, a period of significant economic restructuring in Ghana where agricultural policy focused on technical scientific governance and food security.
The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), led by CEO Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse, has confirmed that a total ban on expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) food containers will take effect on January 1, 2027. This presidential directive serves as the first phase of a broader crackdown on single-use, non-biodegradable plastics. The EPA cited scientific evidence regarding public health risks and environmental damage, specifically the role of Styrofoam in clogging urban drainage systems, as the primary drivers for the policy.
The ban will force a major shift in the hospitality and food packaging sectors. Businesses have roughly 16 months to transition to eco-friendly alternatives, which could temporarily increase operational costs for small-scale street food vendors.
This policy creates a market opening for manufacturers of biodegradable packaging. As Ghana leads this regional environmental shift, first-movers in the green-packaging space could secure significant market share before the 2027 deadline.
A major GHc3 million (~$267,082 USD) initiative is underway in the Ho Municipality to repair 25 kilometers of road networks. The project, overseen by the Department of Urban Roads, targets potholes and infrastructure in Klefe and Taviefe. Municipal Chief Executive Stephen Adom noted that these upgrades are essential to support President Mahama’s 24-Hour Economy policy and make the region more attractive to industrial investors. Similar infrastructure boosts are reported in Northern Ghana, where improved roads are attracting luxury vehicle operators to the Tumu-Bolgatanga routes.
Improved road networks in the Ho and Tumu areas facilitate easier travel for those visiting family or managing projects in the Volta and Upper West regions. Watch for rising luggage charges reported by commuters on newer luxury vehicle routes.
The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) executed a massive sweep across Accra and Kumasi, targeting hotspots like Abossey Okai and Asawase. The operation led to the apprehension of 1,055 individuals, including 662 children and 248 women, most of whom are victims of organized human trafficking rings. Several Ghanaian and foreign nationals suspected of facilitating these exploitative networks were arrested. The GIS has urged the public to stop giving financial aid directly to street beggars, as it fuels the business model of traffickers.
This is one of the largest anti-trafficking operations in recent years, signaling a shift toward addressing the root financial causes of urban street begging.
When visiting Accra or Kumasi, support organized charities rather than direct alms to street children. This helps authorities dismantle the trafficking syndicates that exploit these vulnerable populations.
Popular TikTok and Facebook influencer Ibrahim Kailani Kpa, known as 'Powder Guy,' has been granted bail of GHc400,000 (~$35,611 USD) following charges of defrauding seven individuals of $32,000. Kpa allegedly used his social media platform to advertise false travel visas to the US, Canada, and Nicaragua. He admitted to receiving the funds but claimed he handed them to accomplices who subsequently disappeared.
Visa fraud is a pervasive issue in Ghana, often referred to as 'connection man' scams. Influencers are increasingly being used to lend a veneer of legitimacy to these operations.
In a shocking twist in the Tuba shooting case involving the murder of car dealer Mohammed Rahman, investigators have traced the firearm used back to the residence of legendary footballer Asamoah Gyan. Reports indicate the weapon was previously stolen from the footballer’s home. In other crime news, two suspects were arrested for the murder of the newly enskinned Chief of Yidani and his son in the Northern Region.
The trial in the Tuba murder case will now focus on how a stolen weapon from a high-profile residence ended up in the hands of suspected killers. This may prompt a national conversation on firearm security for licensed owners.
Ghanaian star Mohammed Kudus made his long-awaited return to Premier League action, appearing in the 68th minute of Tottenham’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United. This was Kudus’ first appearance in seven months, providing a massive boost to the Black Stars ahead of upcoming international cycles.
Black Stars context: Kudus' return to fitness is critical for Ghana's qualification campaigns, as he remains the national team's primary creative engine.
Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies secured a 2-1 comeback victory against Nigeria’s Edo Queens, finishing top of Group B. Goals from Rebecca Asamani and Milot Pokuaa ensured the side moves to the semifinals against host team USFA.
Ghana's national volleyball team defeated Zambia 3-1 in Nairobi to secure a quarterfinal spot. They are scheduled to face Rwanda on September 1, 2025, as they push for a historic podium finish.
