The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is facing urgent calls for intervention following a tragic electrical hazard in the Oti Region, while simultaneously managing extensive maintenance works in the Greater Accra Region. In the Krachi East Municipality, a fallen high-tension cable has already claimed the lives of more than ten cattle and continues to pose a significant threat to human life. Meanwhile, residents in several prominent neighborhoods in Accra East are preparing for a scheduled eight-hour power interruption intended to facilitate critical network repairs and enhance service delivery.
The crisis in Abrewanko, a farming community in Krachi East, began three days ago when a high-tension electricity cable collapsed into a local stream. The live wire electrified the water, leading to the immediate electrocution of at least ten cattle that had moved to the stream to drink. Ericson Adonteng Boateng, the local Assembly Member, has expressed deep concern over the delay in ECG's response, emphasizing that the area remains a death trap for both livestock and residents. He has issued a stern warning for the community, particularly children, to avoid the stream until the power supply is officially disconnected and the fallen cable is removed.
In the capital, ECG has announced that an emergency maintenance exercise will take place on Sunday, August 30, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This planned outage is necessary for engineers to address specific network faults and conduct preventive maintenance. The affected areas in the Accra East Region include Trassaco, Saso, Sidalco, Signature Apartments, Cassa Trassaco, Action Chapel, Tip Toe Lane, and parts of Caprice. The company has apologized for the impending inconvenience and advised both domestic and commercial customers to plan their activities around the eight-hour window.
These concurrent events underscore the dual challenges of public safety and infrastructure reliability facing the national power distributor. While the scheduled outages in Accra represent a proactive attempt to stabilize the grid, the situation in Abrewanko highlights the devastating consequences of infrastructure failure in rural areas. Local authorities in Krachi East continue to push for an immediate resolution to ensure no human lives are lost, while ECG works to balance emergency field responses with necessary system upgrades in urban centers.
