Ghana's highway safety and infrastructure came into sharp focus this August following a major emergency intervention on the Techiman-Nkoranza Highway and growing concerns over construction delays on the Tema-Aflao road. On August 27, 2026, the Ghana National Fire Service successfully averted a potential disaster at Fiaso after a bulk tanker carrying approximately 4,000kg of gas suffered an accident. The incident, which triggered a significant gas leak, prompted an immediate response from fire crews stationed in Techiman and Nkoranza after the alarm was raised at 9:35 am. Firefighters utilized foam concentrate to neutralize the leak and halted all traffic to ensure public safety. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and the Municipal Chief Executive of Nkoranza South, Godfred Dapaa, was on-site to oversee the emergency operations. While emergency services managed the crisis in the Bono East Region, commuters on the Tema-Aflao Highway continue to grapple with persistent delays and traffic congestion. The 17-kilometre stretch, which is being expanded into a six-lane highway to improve regional connectivity, has faced a turbulent timeline since its inception. Originally launched in October 2020 and funded by a bilateral loan from the United Kingdom, the project was suspended in December 2022. Since work resumed in April 2025, the pace of progress has remained a point of contention for both the government and the public. The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, recently expressed his dissatisfaction with the slow rate of construction, urging contractors to expedite work to alleviate the plight of motorists and local businesses. Despite the current challenges of uneven surfaces and heavy traffic, contractors have indicated that drainage work is ongoing and expect a noticeable improvement in traffic flow by December 2026. This project remains critical for linking the industrial hub of Tema with surrounding communities and the eastern corridor. Together, these events underscore the dual challenges facing Ghana’s transport sector: the need for rapid, effective emergency response and the urgent demand for the timely completion of high-quality road infrastructure to support the nation's economic growth.
