President John Dramani Mahama is scheduled to cut the sod for the construction of the Accra Convention Centre at the Trade Fair site in La, Accra. The project, funded by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), represents a major infrastructure investment aimed at boosting the nation's capacity for international events. The announcement was made by the President’s Spokesperson and Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who indicated that the ceremony will take place in the coming weeks.
Spanning a total area of 81,422 square metres, the new facility is designed to serve as a premier destination for large-scale conferences and high-level gatherings. At its core, the centre will feature a main conference hall capable of seating 3,000 people. Additional facilities include a dedicated Presidential Hall for high-level executive meetings and four large auditoriums, providing versatile spaces for various cultural and economic activities.
The project is a central component of the government's strategy to redevelop the Trade Fair Centre and revitalize the La enclave. By utilizing investment from SSNIT, the government aims to create a significant revenue-generating asset that supports the broader tourism sector. The modern amenities planned for the site are expected to modernize the capital's hosting capabilities and provide a world-class venue for both local and international stakeholders.
Once completed, the Accra Convention Centre is expected to enhance Ghana’s competitiveness as a hub for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) in the West African sub-region. The government anticipates that the facility will not only host international summits but also drive local economic growth through increased demand for hospitality and tourism services. The start of construction marks a pivotal step in the ongoing transformation of the Trade Fair site into a modern commercial and tourist hub.
