Asharami Ghana has commissioned a new 6,000-metric-tonne Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) storage terminal at the Tema Oil Jetty to boost the nation’s energy security and clean cooking initiatives. The newly inaugurated facility is a significant addition to the country’s energy infrastructure, increasing Ghana’s total national LPG storage capacity by approximately 10%. The terminal is specifically designed to enhance the reliability of fuel supply and support the government’s ambitious goal of achieving at least 50% LPG access for Ghanaian households by 2030.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, highlighted the importance of private sector investment in the downstream petroleum sector. He noted that the facility aligns with President John Mahama’s 24-Hour Economy initiative by ensuring a more consistent and reliable supply of energy to power both domestic and industrial activities. Tameklo emphasized that the automated nature of the terminal will reduce turnaround times for vessels and improve the overall efficiency of gas distribution across the country.
The facility is fully automated and features advanced safety systems designed to meet international standards. It is built to operate in tandem with the MT Asharami Ghana, a specialized LPG carrier, to streamline the discharge and distribution process. This integration is expected to bolster domestic supply and strengthen Ghana’s position in regional energy trade, facilitating more efficient exports to neighbouring countries in the sub-region.
This 6,000-metric-tonne terminal represents the first phase of a larger planned storage complex at the Tema Oil Jetty. By expanding the infrastructure available for cleaner cooking fuels, the project addresses health and environmental challenges associated with traditional biomass fuels like charcoal and wood. As Ghana continues its clean energy transition, such infrastructure investments are vital for ensuring sustainable development and providing citizens with safer, more modern fuel alternatives.
