AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has awarded tertiary scholarships to 30 brilliant but needy students from its host communities as part of its ongoing commitment to education. This latest cohort brings the total number of beneficiaries under the company's community scholarship support scheme to 50 since the program was launched. The initiative is a key pillar of the mine’s 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), which aims to enhance human capital and improve the quality of life in areas impacted by its operations.
The scholarship package is designed to provide comprehensive support for the students throughout their academic journey. In addition to direct financial assistance to cover tuition and other educational costs, each recipient received a laptop and a backpack. These tools are intended to facilitate modern learning and ensure that students from disadvantaged backgrounds have the necessary resources to compete effectively with their peers. During the presentation ceremony, Edmund Oduro Agyei, Director of Sustainability Management at AngloGold Ashanti, emphasized that the company views education as a catalyst for community transformation and long-term development.
Stakeholders from the academic community have lauded the initiative for its role in bridging the educational gap. The Provost of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) praised the mine for its consistent investment in the youth, noting that such corporate social responsibility programs are essential for national development and social mobility. For their part, the student beneficiaries expressed profound gratitude, stating that the financial relief would allow them to concentrate fully on their studies without the constant worry of tuition fees and living expenses.
By integrating these scholarships into its long-term SEDP, AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine is positioning itself as a strategic partner in the regional development of the Ashanti Region. The program not only addresses immediate financial needs but also seeks to create a pipeline of skilled professionals who can contribute back to their communities. As the mine continues its operations, the expansion of such educational initiatives is expected to play a vital role in fostering a sustainable and prosperous environment for its host communities and the nation at large.
