Minister of Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has announced a major infrastructure project to upgrade the principal streets of Accra. The initiative is strategically timed to ensure the capital is in peak condition for Ghana’s 70th Independence anniversary celebrations in March 2027. Under the direction of President John Mahama’s administration, the project aims to improve both the aesthetic appeal and the functional state of the city's primary transport arteries.
The paving and rehabilitation works will be managed by Oswald Investment Limited. Speaking during a formal visit to the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Minister Agbodza explained that the government is prioritizing these principal roads to facilitate smoother traffic flow and enhance the capital's international image. He acknowledged that previous road projects had faced significant setbacks, primarily due to funding constraints, but assured the public that the ministry is now focused on resolving these bottlenecks to ensure the project meets its 2027 deadline.
In addition to the metropolitan-wide upgrades, the Minister addressed specific local concerns raised by the Ga traditional leadership. He responded positively to requests for improved road conditions within the Ga Mashie area and highlighted the potential for local economic benefits. Agbodza emphasized the ministry's interest in providing employment opportunities for local youth within these road construction projects, aiming to combine infrastructure development with community empowerment.
This facelift is part of a broader effort by the Ministry of Roads and Highways to modernize Ghana's urban infrastructure ahead of national milestones. By addressing long-standing maintenance issues and expanding road capacity in the capital, the government seeks to create a lasting legacy that extends beyond the anniversary celebrations. The project represents a key component of the administration's current transportation strategy, focusing on high-traffic urban centers while addressing the immediate infrastructure needs of local communities.
