The Ablekuma North and Ga West Municipal Assemblies have separately broken ground on two major 24-hour market projects, collectively valued at approximately GH¢69 million. These initiatives aim to modernize trading infrastructure and support a broader shift toward a 24-hour economy within the Greater Accra Region. In Darkuman, the Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly has initiated a GH¢35 million project, while the Ga West Municipal Assembly has commenced construction on a GH¢34 million commercial center in Ga Odumase. Both projects are designed to enhance local economic activity, provide secure trading environments, and create immediate employment opportunities for residents during the construction phase.
In the Ablekuma North Municipality, the Darkuman 24-hour market is scheduled for completion within 16 months. Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Adamu Musah Kalamu emphasized that the project is fully funded and will significantly improve the livelihoods of local traders by providing a more organized and accessible space. Mr. Kalamu specifically noted that the assembly will prioritize qualified local artisans and laborers for employment during construction, urging the youth to take advantage of these opportunities. He expressed confidence in the contractor’s ability to maintain high-quality standards while adhering to the strict delivery timeline.
Simultaneously, the Ga West Municipal Assembly has started work on a comprehensive commercial center in Ga Odumase. This project, which costs over GH¢34 million, is designed to be a modern hub featuring 400 stalls, a meat shop, and cold storage facilities. Beyond commerce, the center will integrate essential public services, including a clinic and a police post, to ensure the safety and health of traders and patrons. The Greater Accra Regional Minister and local traditional leaders have highlighted the importance of community involvement, urging the contractor to remain committed to the project’s schedule to ensure its timely delivery for the benefit of the municipality.
The completion of these markets is expected to transform the economic landscape of these districts by extending trading hours and reducing congestion in older, less organized facilities. By integrating security and healthcare services directly into the market infrastructure, the assemblies are setting a standard for sustainable, around-the-clock commercial activity. Municipal authorities have called for total community cooperation to ensure these projects are completed without delay, marking a significant milestone in urban renewal and economic decentralization in the region.
