Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has announced that contractors are set to resume work on Phase Two of the Kumasi Central Market (Kejetia Market) redevelopment project. The project, a critical infrastructure landmark for the Ashanti Region, has been at a standstill for approximately two years, leaving nearly 60% of the second phase incomplete. The breakthrough follows successful negotiations with contractors and formal approval from Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson to release the necessary funding to restart operations on-site immediately.
The resumption is viewed as a vital step for the Kumasi metropolis, as the first phase of the market is already operational but remains under pressure due to the delays in subsequent stages. Minister Ayariga confirmed that the Finance Ministry has authorized a financial framework that utilizes proceeds from the first two phases to facilitate the commencement of Phase Three. This integrated funding approach is intended to ensure continuity and prevent the project from facing further interruptions. Additionally, a specialized committee will be established to monitor contractor performance, ensuring that the remaining work meets strict efficiency and accountability standards.
This infrastructure push is part of a broader "District Economy Markets" initiative, which aligns with the government's economic agenda to boost local productivity. Minister Ayariga emphasized that the redesign of the market system is specifically tailored to enhance the welfare and living conditions of women traders, who are the primary users of the facility. As part of this strategy, the government plans to appoint Regional Economists to work directly with local authorities, assisting them in integrating market development into long-term district economic planning and growth strategies.
The Minister pledged to maintain close collaboration with traditional leaders and local government officials in Kumasi to ensure the project’s smooth implementation. By prioritizing the completion of the Kejetia Market, the administration aims to revitalize the commercial heart of Ghana, providing a modern and safe environment for thousands of traders. This development marks a significant milestone in the government's commitment to national market infrastructure and sustainable local economic transformation.
