The Managing Director of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Edmond Kombat, has announced that the refinery will establish an ultra-modern Burns and Trauma Centre in Tema. This facility is designed to address the critical need for specialized emergency care within Ghana's most densely populated industrial zone. The project will be situated on TOR's own land, ensuring proximity to the numerous industrial operations that characterize the port city.
According to Mr. Kombat, the necessity for a dedicated burns and trauma facility arises from the specific risks associated with the high concentration of manufacturing and processing industries in the area. Currently, workers who suffer industrial accidents often require immediate, specialized medical attention that a dedicated local facility can more effectively provide. This initiative is being positioned as a key component of a broader suite of strategic projects intended to enhance the refinery's future and its role in the national economy.
In addition to the medical facility, TOR is making strides toward improving worker welfare through a proposed affordable housing project. The refinery is currently exploring the development of residential units for its staff on its land, working in collaboration with the Home Ownership Fund. This project aims to alleviate the logistical and financial challenges faced by employees who currently commute long distances to reach the refinery, thereby improving both productivity and the quality of life for the workforce.
These projects signal a proactive approach by the current management to utilize TOR’s assets for the benefit of both its employees and the wider industrial community. By integrating health services and housing into its strategic plans, the refinery aims to create a more resilient and supportive environment for its personnel. The development of the Burns and Trauma Centre, in particular, represents a significant addition to the healthcare infrastructure of the Greater Accra Region, providing a vital safety net for those working in high-risk industrial environments.
