The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has announced plans to establish a specialized, ultra-modern Burns and Trauma Centre in Tema to provide critical emergency care for workers within the industrial enclave. Managing Director Edmond Kombat unveiled the project as part of a series of strategic initiatives intended to enhance the refinery's future and address a significant gap in the region's healthcare infrastructure. The facility is designed to serve the thousands of employees working across various heavy industries in the port city.
According to Mr. Kombat, the decision to build the centre is driven by the high concentration of industrial activity in Tema and the inherent risks associated with such operations. The refinery management identified a pressing need for a dedicated facility capable of handling complex burns and traumatic injuries, which require immediate and specialized medical intervention. By locating the centre within the industrial zone, TOR aims to ensure that victims of workplace accidents receive life-saving treatment during the critical "golden hour" following an injury.
In addition to the medical facility, TOR is exploring the development of affordable housing units on its land to support its workforce. This project, which is being considered in collaboration with the Home Ownership Fund, seeks to provide accommodation for staff members who currently face long commutes to the refinery. Mr. Kombat noted that providing housing closer to the workplace would not only improve the welfare of employees but also enhance the overall operational efficiency of the refinery.
These infrastructure developments represent a broader effort by TOR’s leadership to modernize the state-owned refinery and strengthen its corporate social responsibility. While specific timelines for the commencement of construction were not detailed, the project is framed as a vital component of the refinery's long-term sustainability strategy. The establishment of the Burns and Trauma Centre is expected to provide a safety net for the entire Tema industrial community, positioning TOR as a central player in the region’s industrial safety and health framework.
