Team Kasa, a group of three teachers from the Ashanti Region, has emerged as the winner of the Middle Belt zonal MoMo Fintech Lab Hackathon. Their winning project, a digital platform called Welfare Hub, was selected during the competition held in Kumasi. The event, organised by Mobile Money Limited, sought to identify innovative digital solutions that can address existing gaps within the financial technology sector while enhancing security for users. The Welfare Hub platform is designed to automate the management of welfare contributions and payments for workers’ associations across the country. Traditionally, many of these associations rely on manual processes for collecting dues and distributing funds to members in times of need. Team Kasa’s innovation digitises these transactions, providing a transparent and efficient way to handle group finances. By moving these processes onto a digital platform, the developers aim to promote safer financial transactions and reduce the risks associated with handling cash. The hackathon also featured several other notable fintech solutions competing for the top prize. Susu Vault secured the position of first runner-up, while EaziPay followed as the second runner-up. The competition focused heavily on addressing challenges within the digital financial ecosystem, with a particular emphasis on the rising threat of cybercrimes. Participants were encouraged to build tools that not only improve convenience for consumers but also strengthen the security architecture of mobile financial services. The success of Team Kasa highlights a growing trend of cross-disciplinary innovation in Ghana's tech space, as professionals outside the core software engineering field apply digital tools to solve everyday organisational problems. As the winners of the Middle Belt zone, the team moves forward with a solution that addresses the specific needs of formal and informal worker groups. The hackathon serves as a platform for local developers to scale their ideas, contributing to the broader goal of deepening financial inclusion and securing the digital economy.
