The MoMo Fintech Lab initiative has concluded its Middle Belt Zonal Hackathon at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), naming the finalists who will compete at the national level. The competition was designed to discover and nurture young Ghanaian innovators with the potential to build sustainable financial technology businesses. Team Welfare Hub emerged as the top contender, leading a group of four teams chosen to represent the region at the national grand finale in Accra.
During the event, Mr. Paapa Osei, representing the initiative, stressed the importance of converting raw innovation into structured entrepreneurship. He explained that the MoMo Fintech Lab's primary goal is to ensure that young developers do not just create technology for its own sake but build solutions that solve real-world problems in the financial services sector. Osei noted that the success of any fintech business relies heavily on trust and the ability to deliver tangible benefits to the end-user, urging participants to keep these principles at the core of their designs.
The scale of the initiative reflects a significant appetite for digital innovation in Ghana, with the organizers receiving 1,791 applications from across the country. The Middle Belt Zonal Hackathon served as a critical screening stage to identify the most viable and scalable ideas among the regional entries. By providing a platform for these students and young professionals to pitch their ideas, the lab aims to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical market application in the country's rapidly evolving digital economy.
Following their success at KNUST, the four winning teams will now undergo further preparation for the national stage. The upcoming grand finale in Accra will bring together the best finalists from all zones, offering them the opportunity to secure support and potential investment. This initiative is expected to play a vital role in strengthening Ghana's fintech ecosystem by producing home-grown entrepreneurs capable of competing on both local and international levels.
