Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC-Legon) has further cemented its legacy as the most successful institution in the history of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) by clinching its ninth championship title. In a high-stakes Grand Finale held at the University of Ghana, Legon, PRESEC staged a dramatic comeback to finish with 40 points, surpassing Accra Academy and St Augustine’s College. The contest, which was filled with tension and intellectual rigor, saw Accra Academy finish as the first runner-up with 33 points in their debut final appearance, while St Augustine’s College placed third with 27 points.
The path to victory was not straightforward for the Legon-based school. PRESEC-Legon began the competition trailing behind their rivals, at one point sitting on just 9 points during the early rounds. However, demonstrating remarkable resilience and composure, the PRESEC contestants rallied through the final rounds to overtake their opponents. The atmosphere at the University of Ghana Premier Dome was electric, as supporters from all three schools cheered on their representatives. Accra Academy’s historic qualification for the finals added a layer of novelty to the event, while St Augustine’s College fought gallantly in pursuit of what would have been their third title.
Leading up to the finale, the stakes were elevated by significant incentives promised to the participants. Old students from the three competing schools announced a package of rewards totaling GH₵120,000, alongside scholarships and fully funded foreign vacations for the finalists. The event also drew attention from political figures, including the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, who offered his best wishes to the contestants. While Dumelo playfully dismissed Accra Academy’s chances beforehand, he praised the return of the prestigious competition to his constituency and noted the immense school spirit displayed by all participating institutions.
Produced by Primetime Limited, the 2026 NSMQ was supported by the Ghana Education Service, GOIL PLC, and several other corporate partners. This year’s victory reinforces PRESEC-Legon’s dominance in science and mathematics education in Ghana, marking a successful end to weeks of competitive academic challenges involving top senior high schools across the country. As the 2026 edition concludes, the focus shifts to the continued development of STEM education, with the NSMQ remaining the premier platform for showcasing the academic talent of Ghanaian youth.
