The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has intensified its internal restructuring across Ghana, with hundreds of aspirants undergoing vetting for constituency and national executive positions ahead of the 2028 general elections. This period of internal democracy is being defined by a shift toward grassroots empowerment and financial self-sufficiency. In the Central Region, the vetting process has seen significant participation; in the Effutu Constituency, 50 aspirants—including nine women and one person with a disability—have been cleared to contest various roles on October 24 and 25, 2026. Similarly, in Agona West, the Election Committee has vetted 41 candidates for 16 executive positions, emphasizing the need for disciplined conduct and party unity to strengthen the organization's regional base.
In Agona West, the chairmanship race is centered on economic reforms at the local level. Aspiring Chairman Egyin Nicholas Buadu, the constituency's immediate past elections committee chairman, has pledged to establish ward and branch-level businesses to empower members financially. Buadu argues that creating local income-generating activities will reduce the demoralizing reliance on higher party echelons for resources and help resolve long-standing factionalism. His platform focuses on incorporating former rivals into the executive body to ensure a cohesive front, a sentiment echoed by Agona West Election Committee Chairperson Ms. Hamid Selma, who described the internal polls as vital for revitalizing party structures.
Leadership contests in the Mion constituency also highlight a demand for deep-rooted local representation. Alhassan Issah is challenging incumbent Chairman Adam Yussif Fitta for the second time, urging delegates to prioritize leaders with strong grassroots connections. Issah and vice-chairmanship hopeful Nignan Daniel Nkandin, who brings 25 years of branch leadership experience, are advocating for a mobilization strategy that respects Mion’s status as a traditional NDC stronghold. They have called for a peaceful campaign to avoid the divisive rhetoric that has hampered past efforts, focusing instead on the long-term goal of consolidating support for the 2028 electoral cycle.
On the national stage, the conversation is shifting toward institutionalizing welfare and financial stability for the party’s youth wing. Mr. Fohad Agbenyadzi, the Eastern Regional Deputy Youth Organiser, has announced his candidacy for Deputy National Youth Organiser with a proposal to launch "Youth Wing in Ghana Limited." This commercial entity would engage in income-generating activities to fund the wing's operations, supplemented by a proposed youth insurance company to provide welfare support for grassroots organizers. By pitching these structural innovations, aspirants across all levels are signaling a move away from traditional patronage toward a more self-sustaining and professionally managed political organization.
