The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has ramped up its internal democratic processes across several constituencies as it begins structuring its leadership for the 2028 general elections. In the Effutu Constituency, the party has successfully vetted 50 aspirants to contest various executive positions. Ms. Ernestina Nabari, the Effutu NDC Director of Elections, confirmed that the pool of candidates includes nine females and one person with a disability, reflecting the party's commitment to inclusivity. The Effutu elections are scheduled to take place during a constituency conference on October 24 and 25, 2026, with three candidates vying for the chairmanship and two candidates each competing for the secretary and treasurer roles.
Simultaneously, the Afadzato South Constituency has seen 50 candidates file nominations to contest executive roles. Mr. Denise Golo, the Director of Elections for the area, noted that while interest was high, one prospective candidate failed to submit their forms before the deadline. In most categories within Afadzato South, including the chairmanship and secretariat, the race is expected to be a head-to-head contest with two candidates filed for each position. Party officials in the region have emphasized the need for unity among delegates and stakeholders to ensure a formidable front ahead of the next national election cycle.
However, the reorganization process has not been without controversy. The NDC has officially confirmed the disqualification of Dzifa Gunu, the CEO of Ghana Digital Centres Limited, from the La Dadekotopon Constituency Secretary race. Mahdi Gibril, the NDC’s Acting Director of Elections and IT, stated that the regional elections committee disqualified Gunu for failing to comply with party guidelines that require officials to resign from certain positions six months prior to filing their nominations. Although Gunu has appealed the decision, claiming he had communicated his resignation to the appointing authority, the party has moved forward with opening an online portal for further nomination forms from October 6 to October 8.
In the Ellembelle Constituency, the race for the Vice-Chairmanship has also taken shape with the candidacy of Mr. Andrew Ehoma Agyarko. A long-serving executive member with a history of party service dating back to the late 1990s, Agyarko stated that his bid is centered on leveraging his experience in youth mobilization and internal mediation to strengthen the party’s grassroots. These localized contests across Effutu, Afadzato South, and Ellembelle represent the broader national strategy of the NDC to revitalize its internal structures and foster democracy through branch-level elections as they prepare for future electoral challenges.
