MTN Ghana has held its first-ever DigiFest Game Developer Contest at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) as part of activities marking the company’s 30th anniversary. The competition, which attracted over 50 entries from across the country, serves as a platform to empower young Ghanaian developers and foster innovation within the local gaming ecosystem. Organizers noted that the initiative aims to provide a dedicated space for creators to showcase software that is both technically sound and culturally relevant.
Out of the initial entries, 10 projects were shortlisted to compete in two main categories: Industry Game Developers and University Student Game Developers. Finalists presented their work to a panel of judges, receiving feedback on technical execution and storytelling. The top performers were awarded prizes including MacBook Pro laptops and specialized mentorship designed to help refine their projects for commercialization. Participants at the event praised the platform for opening new pathways for collaboration and career opportunities in the burgeoning technology sector.
Speaking at the event, MTN’s Yaw Antwi Boadu emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting developers who create games reflecting Ghana’s unique cultural identity. He noted that the contest aims to bridge the gap between local talent and global gaming markets, encouraging the production of locally made content that resonates with the Ghanaian experience. Judges also highlighted the potential for these digital tools to serve as educational resources while promoting African narratives to a wider audience.
Following the success of this maiden edition, MTN officials indicated plans to make the DigiFest Game Developer Contest an annual event. The initiative is expected to play a vital role in promoting local innovation and supporting Africa’s participation in the global gaming industry. By institutionalizing this support, MTN aims to help local developers scale their projects and compete on international platforms.
