The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has launched a comprehensive support initiative for grassroots football, announcing a massive distribution of equipment to Colts clubs ahead of the 2026/27 season. Speaking at the season launch event held at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku unveiled a package that includes 3,000 footballs, 15,000 jerseys, and 15,000 pairs of casual shoes. This initiative, executed in partnership with Hoshi International, is designed to alleviate the financial and logistical burdens faced by youth clubs while strengthening the foundational layers of the Ghanaian game.
This latest rollout is part of a sustained commitment by the GFA, which has invested approximately US$100,000 annually into grassroots equipment since the Colts system was revitalized in 2020. Now entering its sixth consecutive season since the restructuring, the program currently supports 859 active clubs nationwide. By providing high-quality kits and training gear, the GFA aims to create a more seamless transition for young talents moving from community-based play into organized national team structures. The launch event was well-attended by club owners, coaches, and legendary former Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan, who is himself a celebrated product of the Colts system.
Beyond equipment, President Okraku used the platform to address the critical issue of infrastructure, making a formal appeal to the government to grant Colts clubs free access to state-owned astroturf facilities. He emphasized that the cost and availability of proper pitches remain significant hurdles for grassroots development. Highlighting the system's historical success, the GFA recognized legendary figures such as Abedi Pele, Michael Essien, and Thomas Partey as graduates of this developmental structure. This holistic approach—combining material support, infrastructure advocacy, and the celebration of past icons—underscores the GFA’s strategy to ensure the next generation of Ghanaian football stars has the resources necessary to reach the global stage.
