The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has organized a comprehensive breast cancer awareness and screening program in Accra, aimed at improving health outcomes for workers through early detection. Speaking at the event, TUC Secretary-General Joshua Ansah underscored that early diagnosis is the most effective tool in the fight against the disease. He called on workers across the country to take advantage of available screening services, stressing that the union remains committed to the physical well-being of its members as a prerequisite for national productivity.
Mr. Ansah observed that many workers, particularly women, often struggle to find time for regular health check-ups due to the competing demands of their professional and personal lives. He urged both men and women to be proactive about their health, noting that breast cancer awareness should not be limited by gender or social obligations. By bringing screening services directly to the workspace or organizing dedicated union events, the TUC aims to lower the barriers that often prevent employees from seeking timely medical advice.
The program also featured educational sessions led by health professionals who addressed common misconceptions surrounding breast cancer. Experts cautioned participants against the dangerous assumption that a lump is only a concern if it is painful, advising that any unusual change in breast tissue requires immediate medical evaluation. Madam Harriet Botchway, representing the Union, added that the TUC has maintained a consistent focus on breast cancer advocacy for nearly a decade, integrating health education into its broader mission of worker protection.
This latest initiative reflects the TUC’s ongoing strategy to provide holistic support to the Ghanaian workforce. Beyond traditional labor negotiations, the union is increasingly focusing on preventive healthcare to ensure a resilient and healthy labor force. The TUC plans to continue these awareness drives in the future, fostering a culture of regular health monitoring and ensuring that workers are equipped with the knowledge and resources necessary to manage their health effectively.
