Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has announced that the task force established to oversee the creation of a new national airline for Ghana is nearing the completion of its assignment. This development represents a critical milestone in the government's strategy to re-establish a sovereign presence in the aviation industry. According to the Minister, the task force's final report will provide the necessary framework for launching a carrier designed to enhance regional connectivity and strengthen Ghana's position within the African air transport market. During his remarks, Mr. Nikpe emphasized that the new airline is intended to follow the successful trajectories of regional partners such as Uganda Airlines. He noted that the initiative is part of a broader commitment to improving air links across the continent, facilitating easier movement for both passengers and cargo. The Minister referenced the legacy of the defunct Ghana Airways, suggesting that the government is focused on building a sustainable model that avoids past challenges while fulfilling the nation’s long-held ambition of having a flag carrier. The Minister's update comes at a time of increased activity in the Ghanaian aviation sector, highlighted by efforts from regional peers to expand their footprint in the country. Uganda Airlines, for instance, has expressed a desire to increase its flight frequency between Accra and Entebbe, with the ultimate goal of offering daily service. Mr. Nikpe pointed out that a new Ghanaian national carrier would work in tandem with such regional players to boost trade and tourism, creating a more integrated economic environment across West and East Africa. As the task force prepares to submit its final findings, the Ministry of Transport is expected to move into the next phase of implementation, which includes securing investment and finalizing operational logistics. The completion of this preliminary work is seen as a vital step for the administration under President John Mahama to deliver on its promises regarding infrastructure and transportation. Officials remain optimistic that the new airline will not only provide jobs but also serve as a strategic asset in Ghana's drive toward becoming a primary aviation hub in the sub-region.
