Uganda Airlines has officially commenced its operations in Ghana with an inaugural flight to Accra on October 27, marking a significant milestone in regional air connectivity. The move is expected to serve as a catalyst for enhanced trade, tourism, and economic cooperation between Ghana and Uganda. The arrival of the East African carrier aligns with Ghana’s strategic objective to position itself as the premier aviation hub in the West African sub-region, providing a direct link between the two nations.
Speaking at a ceremony to welcome the maiden flight, the Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, emphasized the strategic importance of this new route. She noted that the presence of Uganda Airlines would not only facilitate smoother travel but also foster deeper cultural exchange and stronger economic ties. According to Opare, increasing air connectivity is a vital component of boosting the continent’s aviation sector and supporting the broader goals of regional integration.
In addition to economic benefits, the new service is expected to improve the ease of doing business by providing a more efficient travel option for entrepreneurs and investors moving between East and West Africa. Opare reaffirmed the commitment of the GACL to ensuring that Ghana's airport infrastructure remains capable of supporting such growth. She stated that the company is dedicated to maintaining efficient operations and high-quality services to ensure a seamless experience for all passengers and airline partners.
The launch of the Entebbe-Accra route is seen as a major step toward addressing the historical challenges of intra-African air travel, which has often required lengthy layovers in Europe or the Middle East. As more airlines establish routes into the Kotoka International Airport, Ghana continues to build its capacity to handle increased traffic and diverse flight operations. This development is expected to yield long-term benefits for the local tourism industry and the broader national economy as connectivity improves across the continent.
