Construction on the 19.5-kilometre Accra-Tema Motorway and Extensions Project has reached 53% completion, marking a significant milestone in the effort to modernise Ghana's busiest thoroughfare. The US$339 million project, managed by Accra-Tema Expressway Limited (ATEL) in partnership with the government, remains on track for an August 2027 completion date. Current construction activities are focused on road pavements, drainage systems, and the development of major structures along the corridor.
Chief Resident Engineer Ing. Kwabena Bempong has confirmed that while the project is slightly behind schedule, the delay is primarily due to the complex process of relocating utility infrastructure. To mitigate these setbacks, ATEL has allocated additional resources and implemented measures to accelerate work on the remaining phases. The finished project will feature a sophisticated blend of urban highways and access-controlled expressways, specifically designed to ease the chronic traffic congestion between Accra and Tema while improving safety for both motorists and pedestrians.
The expansion initiative, which aligns with President John Mahama’s vision for enhanced national road infrastructure, operates under a 30-year public-private partnership model. The design includes plans for an eventual expansion to five lanes and the upgrading of key interchanges along the route to bolster trade connectivity. To maintain transparency, a new project website has been launched to provide the public with real-time progress updates and a platform to address community concerns as construction continues toward the 2027 deadline.
