Minister for Transport Joseph Bukari Nikpe has announced that the task force responsible for establishing a new national airline is nearing the conclusion of its work. Speaking on the progress of the aviation sector, the Minister indicated that the team's efforts to provide a roadmap for the new carrier are in their final stages. This development marks a significant step in the government’s ambition to re-establish a national presence in the international and regional aviation markets, following the absence of a state-backed carrier for several years.
Nikpe underscored the strategic necessity of a national carrier, linking its success directly to the sustainability of the country's aviation infrastructure. He argued that while the government has committed significant resources to modernizing and expanding airports across Ghana, these investments require a dedicated airline to maximize their utility. Without a national carrier to facilitate passenger transport and serve as a primary user of these facilities, the Minister suggested that maintaining high-level infrastructure would become increasingly difficult to justify from an economic perspective.
The Minister further highlighted the role of the proposed airline in boosting broader economic activities. By increasing connectivity and driving passenger traffic, the national carrier is expected to serve as a catalyst for growth in related sectors such as tourism and international trade. As the task force concludes its final assessments, the Ministry of Transport is preparing to review the findings, which will determine the operational framework and timeline for the airline’s eventual launch. This progress reflects the current administration's commitment to ensuring that Ghana becomes a leading aviation hub in the West African sub-region.
