Minister for Energy and Green Transition Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor has announced a strategic plan to install 3,000 new transformers across Ghana in 2027. This initiative is a core component of the ministry's broader effort to enhance electricity reliability and meet the growing energy demands of the country. Speaking during a performance review of energy sector institutions for the year 2026, the Minister detailed how the government intends to build a more resilient and affordable energy infrastructure to support economic growth. Refinement of the power distribution network remains a top priority to ensure that the gains made in generation capacity translate into stable power for consumers.Reflecting on the progress made over the past year, Dr. Jinapor highlighted that Ghana's national electricity access reached 89.13% by the end of 2026. While acknowledging this milestone, the Minister noted that increasing access must be matched by improvements in the quality of service. The planned rollout of 3,000 transformers is specifically designed to address local grid instabilities and ensure that communities already connected to the national grid experience fewer power fluctuations and improved voltage quality. This technical expansion is expected to reduce technical losses and improve the overall efficiency of the distribution system. The Minister also used the review session to demand greater accountability from the various energy agencies and institutions under his purview. He emphasized that for the 2027 targets to be met, there must be a significant shift toward efficiency and transparency in operations. Dr. Jinapor urged the leadership of these agencies to demonstrate tangible performance improvements, stressing that the public expects value for money and a dependable energy supply. He cautioned that administrative hurdles and inefficiencies must be eliminated to streamline the delivery of energy projects and maintain public trust.Looking ahead, the Ministry for Energy and Green Transition remains focused on creating a secure energy environment that can sustain industrial expansion and improve the daily lives of Ghanaians. The 2027 priorities represent a pivot toward modernizing the grid and ensuring long-term energy security. By prioritizing both infrastructure expansion and institutional reform, the government aims to position the energy sector as a robust engine for national development in the coming year, providing the necessary foundation for a more prosperous economy.
