Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, Ghana's Minister for Energy and Green Transition, has announced plans for a grid-scale 200MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to enhance the country's power stability and renewable energy integration. Speaking at the ECOWAS Energy Ministers Meeting, the Minister detailed that the 1,500 MWh storage facility is designed to significantly improve the efficiency of solar energy use. By capturing excess power during the day, the system will allow the national grid to better manage peak electricity demands and provide a more reliable buffer for intermittent renewable sources.
During the regional meeting, Dr. Jinapor emphasized that the focus of West African energy policy must shift from mere generation to "smart energy management." He highlighted the necessity of grid-scale storage as a cornerstone of this transition, noting that such infrastructure is vital for addressing the energy deficits currently affecting the region. To support these technological advancements, the Minister called for greater regulatory clarity across ECOWAS member states to attract the private investment required for large-scale energy infrastructure projects.
Beyond storage technology, Dr. Jinapor advocated for a broader overhaul of the regional energy sector, including the revival of local oil refining to reduce dependency on imported fuels. This move is seen as essential for long-term energy security and cost reduction within the sub-region. ECOWAS Commissioner Amin Amidu Sulemani supported the call for modernization, pointing out that approximately 180 million people in West Africa still lack access to electricity, a deficit that requires both innovative technology and updated policy frameworks to resolve.
The proposed BESS project aligns with Ghana's commitment to a green energy transition and its role as a key player in the West African Power Pool. By implementing this storage capacity, the government aims to provide a more resilient power supply while setting a standard for renewable energy adoption in the sub-region. The initiative marks a significant step toward meeting domestic energy goals and regional commitments to expanding electricity access through sustainable and efficient infrastructure.
