Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, the Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), has called for the harmonization of energy regulations across African nations to drive growth in the oil and gas sector. Speaking at the OTL Africa Downstream Energy Week in Lagos, Nigeria, Tameklo emphasized that aligning regulatory frameworks is essential for creating a more integrated and efficient market on the continent. He participated in a high-level panel discussion focused on regulatory convergence, where he argued that a unified approach is necessary to address the fragmented nature of regional energy policies.
During the session, the NPA Chief Executive highlighted that regulatory convergence should be viewed as a strategic tool to unlock significant investment opportunities. By streamlining rules and standards, African nations can reduce market friction and attract the capital required for large-scale energy projects. Tameklo specifically advocated for increased strategic investment in refining infrastructure and the adoption of modern technology to boost domestic production capacities, which would ultimately reduce the continent’s heavy reliance on imported petroleum products.
In addition to economic benefits, Tameklo underscored the importance of stronger collaboration among regional regulators and industry stakeholders. He noted that fostering innovation and enhancing energy security requires a collective effort to share best practices and harmonize safety and quality standards. Such cooperation, he stated, is vital for driving sustainable growth and generating much-needed job opportunities across the energy value chain, ensuring that Africa can better navigate the complexities of the global energy market while securing its own energy future.
