Gold Fields Ghana Limited (GFGL) has announced that its total trade volume within the country has reached approximately $4.26 billion since the year 2000. This milestone was disclosed during the company’s third Suppliers Conference held in Tarkwa, where the mining giant reaffirmed its commitment to deepening the participation of local businesses in its value chain. The two-day event brought together over 300 suppliers to discuss strategies for building more resilient and sustainable local supply networks.
Speaking at the conference, Gold Fields Supply Chain Manager, Mr. Joshua Donkor, emphasized that the company's focus has shifted toward long-term skills development for local traders. He highlighted successful indigenous partnerships with firms such as WTS and Zen Petroleum as evidence of how local procurement can drive industrial growth and create significant domestic impact. By prioritizing Ghanaian suppliers, Gold Fields aims to ensure that the economic benefits of mining are more effectively integrated into the national economy, fostering a robust industrial ecosystem beyond the mining pits.
A significant portion of the conference was dedicated to addressing the underrepresentation of women in the mining supply chain. Mr. Donkor called for deliberate efforts to increase the involvement of women-led businesses and urged financial institutions to provide the necessary capital support to help these entrepreneurs scale their operations. As the industry faces evolving global economic pressures, Gold Fields intends to use these platforms to promote supply chain resilience and local procurement, ensuring that its operations continue to serve as a catalyst for sustainable development in Ghana.
