The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has called on Ghanaian artisans and entrepreneurs to capitalize on the upcoming 18th International Arts and Handicraft Trade Show of Ouagadougou (SIAO 2026). As Ghana prepares for its role as the Guest Country of Honour, the Minister emphasized that the event offers a premier platform for the nation's creative sector to reach international markets and showcase local craftsmanship. The message was delivered on behalf of the Minister by Ghana's Ambassador to Burkina Faso during the "Ghana Day" celebrations held on November 3, 2026.
Ghana's designation as the Guest Country of Honour at SIAO 2026 underscores the deepening economic and diplomatic ties between Ghana and Burkina Faso. Mrs. Ofosu-Adjare highlighted that such international exhibitions are vital for fostering economic cooperation and enabling local businesses to scale beyond domestic borders. She also expressed appreciation for the warm reception from the Burkinabe people, noting that regional integration and cross-border partnerships remain central to the ministry's long-term trade strategy for the sub-region.
Beyond the immediate opportunities at the trade show, the government is taking structural steps to facilitate sustained trade between the two nations. To support this goal, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) announced plans to establish a dedicated Ghana Trade House in Ouagadougou. This facility is expected to serve as a permanent hub for Ghanaian products, significantly enhancing market access and providing critical logistical support for exporters looking to establish a more permanent presence in the Burkinabe market.
The ministry's call to action serves as a reminder of the significant growth potential within Ghana's handicraft and creative industries. By participating in SIAO 2026, artisans have the chance to network with global buyers, understand evolving market trends, and secure contracts that drive foreign exchange earnings. The collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Trade and GEPA aim to ensure that Ghana's prominent status at the event translates into tangible economic benefits for small and medium-scale enterprises across the country.
