GNAT Issues Strike Ultimatum Over Promotion Delays While TUSAAG Suspends Industrial Action

The Ghanaian education sector is currently navigating a complex period of labor unrest as two major associations navigate disputes with the government and education authorities. The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has officially issued a stern ultimatum to the Ghana Education Service (GES), demanding the resolution of several long-standing grievances by September 7, 2026. This warning comes as the Technical Universities Senior Administrators Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) announced a temporary suspension of its own industrial action, signaling a fragile period of negotiation for the nation's academic institutions.

Speaking at a meeting in Accra on August 7, 2026, GNAT National President Prosper Tachie highlighted the growing frustration among teachers regarding delays in promotion placements and the failure to renew the Collective Agreement, which expired on July 31, 2026. GNAT emphasized that these administrative bottlenecks have resulted in significant financial difficulties for its members, who have been left in professional limbo without their rightful ranks and benefits. The association made it clear that if these issues are not resolved by the September deadline, they will proceed with industrial action to protect the interests and career progression of their members.

Parallel to the developments at GNAT, TUSAAG has directed its members to resume work following renewed discussions with government stakeholders. The administrators had initially withdrawn their services over unpaid research and interim allowances. While TUSAAG expressed gratitude to its members and the public for their support during the strike, leadership emphasized that the suspension is contingent upon the government's commitment to continue negotiations in good faith. The association is particularly focused on finalizing agreements with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to ensure all outstanding financial obligations are met.

These labor movements place significant pressure on the current administration of President John Mahama to stabilize the education sector and ensure industrial peace. The contrast between GNAT's impending deadline and TUSAAG's cautious resumption of work underscores the systemic challenges within Ghana's educational payroll and promotion structures. The coming weeks will be critical as stakeholders monitor whether the Ghana Education Service and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission can deliver the necessary reforms to prevent a complete shutdown of schools and technical universities.
