Ghana recorded a significant trade surplus of US$8.80 billion during the first eight months of 2026, marking a robust performance in the country's external sector. According to data from the Bank of Ghana, this improvement was underpinned by a 24.8% surge in total export earnings, which reached US$22.39 billion by August. The positive trade balance highlights the resilience of the nation's primary export commodities despite various shifts in global market conditions.
The growth in export revenue was largely propelled by the strong performance of gold and crude oil. Gold receipts, which remain the country's leading export earner, rose by 32.9% to reach US$14.86 billion. Similarly, crude oil exports experienced a sharp increase of 32.8%, totaling US$2.42 billion. These gains were supported by a composite weighted average price index for key commodities—cocoa, gold, and crude oil—which increased by 5.6% year-to-date. Specifically, crude oil prices saw a significant 42.9% rise during the period, which heavily influenced the overall index.
Cocoa export receipts also contributed to the upward trend, rising by 9.9% to US$2.71 billion. However, the overall annual growth of the commodity price index slowed to 15.4% in August 2026, compared to 20.3% in the same period the previous year, primarily due to a decline in cocoa prices on the international market. In contrast to the traditional sectors, non-traditional exports (NTEs) faced challenges, with earnings declining by 3.0% to US$2.39 billion. This drop indicates a slight contraction in the diversification of the export base during the period under review.
The trade surplus of US$8.80 billion reflects Ghana's continued reliance on its mineral and energy resources to drive national revenue. While the surge in gold and oil prices has bolstered the trade position, the dip in non-traditional exports suggests a need for renewed focus on value-added products to ensure long-term stability. As the year progresses, the central bank's data will be critical for assessing the sustainability of these gains in the face of fluctuating global commodity prices.
