The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has recorded a significant 24% increase in net income, reaching US$813.5 million for the nine-month period ending September 30, 2026. This financial milestone comes as the bank continues to expand its footprint across the continent, reporting a 12% growth in total assets which now stand at US$54.1 billion. The results reflect the institution's resilience and its ability to generate consistent value despite a volatile global economic landscape.
The growth in the bank's asset base was primarily driven by an expanded lending portfolio and a steady rise in interest income. During the period under review, Afreximbank successfully executed a US$1.5 billion bond issuance, strengthening its capital position and providing the necessary resources to support its mandate of financing and promoting intra- and extra-African trade. This capital injection has allowed the bank to maintain a robust lending pipeline while ensuring long-term financial stability.
In terms of asset quality, the bank maintained a disciplined approach to risk management, reporting a low non-performing loan (NPL) ratio of 2.48%. This figure underscores the institution's prudent credit policies and the overall health of its existing portfolio. Furthermore, the bank’s liquidity position remains exceptionally strong, with liquid assets totaling US$6.1 billion, providing a significant buffer to meet its operational requirements and strategic obligations.
Beyond its immediate financial performance, Afreximbank has taken strategic steps to address broader regional challenges. The bank recently launched a US$10 billion Gulf Crisis Response Programme, designed to assist member countries in navigating the economic disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions. This initiative demonstrates the bank's commitment to playing a counter-cyclical role, ensuring that African economies remain resilient in the face of external shocks and fluctuating global market conditions.
