The Ghana Publishing Company Limited (GPCL) is currently in negotiations with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to settle an outstanding Value Added Tax (VAT) liability totaling GH¢22 million. Managing Director Nana Kwasi Boaitey disclosed the situation during a press briefing on November 2, 2026, as part of the Government Accountability Series. The debt, which was accrued over a five-year period between 2020 and 2024, represents a significant financial hurdle as it exceeds the company's most recent annual profit.
According to Boaitey, the current management team became aware of the full extent of the tax liability approximately a month ago following an official notification. Despite the scale of the arrears, the Managing Director expressed a firm commitment to addressing both inherited and emerging financial issues. The company is specifically seeking an installment plan that will allow it to settle the debt systematically while maintaining enough liquidity to support its ongoing operations and prevent the accumulation of further liabilities.
This tax challenge emerges alongside a period of improved financial performance for the state-owned enterprise. GPCL reported a profit after tax of GH¢16.96 million for the 2025 financial year, a substantial growth compared to the GH¢2.23 million recorded in 2024. While the GH¢22 million debt remains larger than the 2025 profit, Boaitey noted that the company is focused on sustaining its recent reforms and strengthening its financial position to ensure long-term stability and compliance with national tax regulations.
