Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has announced a dividend payment of GH₵30 million to the government, marking the first time the company has declared such a payment since its establishment 19 years ago. This landmark decision follows a year of increased profitability, with the company recording a profit of GH₵354.6 million for the 2025 financial year. The announcement represents a significant fiscal milestone for the state-owned entity, which was founded in 2007 to plan, develop, manage, and maintain all airports and aerodromes in the country.
The reported profit for 2025 shows a steady upward trajectory compared to the performance of the previous year, when the company posted GH₵336 million in earnings. This financial growth was achieved despite a complex operating environment characterized by high capital expenditures and ongoing debt obligations. GACL has been working to service substantial loans previously secured for major infrastructure projects, including terminal expansions and airport upgrades, which had historically limited its capacity to return funds to the state.
Furthermore, the GH₵30 million dividend comes as GACL continues to manage the financial pressures of operating several regional airports. While these domestic hubs are critical for enhancing national connectivity and economic activity, many currently operate at a loss, requiring significant cross-subsidization from the profitable operations at Kotoka International Airport. By successfully declaring this first dividend, GACL demonstrates an improved ability to balance its public service mandate with commercial viability and fiscal discipline.
