The Ghana Education Service (GES) has successfully completed a three-day national promotion exercise for more than 60,000 teachers across the country. The assessment process, which concluded on November 5, marks a significant milestone in the implementation of a new career progression policy within the education sector. This initiative is designed to streamline the advancement process and ensure that educators are fairly rewarded for their professional growth and years of service.
Under the new framework, the GES has decoupled professional ranks from administrative roles, a move intended to provide clearer pathways for teachers to ascend the career ladder without necessarily moving into management positions. This policy shift is reflected in the substantial expansion of higher-level ranks; specifically, positions for Director II are set to increase by 1,500%, while Director I roles will see a 340% increase. The Service believes this approach will better recognize the professional competence and classroom experience of long-serving educators.
The GES expressed appreciation to all stakeholders involved in the exercise, emphasizing that the reforms are aimed at boosting staff morale and overall motivation. By providing more opportunities for promotion, the service aims to retain experienced talent within the teaching profession and improve the quality of education delivery. The conclusion of this exercise signals a shift towards a more merit-based and accessible promotion system for Ghana's public school teachers.
