First Sky Limited has successfully completed and integrated a 50-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic power plant in the Yendi Municipality of the Northern Region into the national electricity grid. This development marks a significant expansion of renewable energy capacity in northern Ghana, with the facility now contributing clean power directly to the national network to support domestic and industrial demand.
The project’s integration was facilitated by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), which oversaw the technical requirements for linking the new facility to the country's power transmission infrastructure. To ensure the efficient transfer of electricity, a dedicated four-kilometre, 161-kilovolt (kV) transmission line was constructed to connect the solar farm to the existing national grid system.
As one of the substantial private-sector-led renewable energy investments in the Northern Region, the 50MW Yendi plant is expected to enhance the stability of the power supply in the northern corridor. The facility contributes to the national goal of increasing the share of solar and other renewables in the generation mix, supporting Ghana’s broader strategy for energy transition and environmental sustainability.
The successful connection of the Yendi solar plant underscores the importance of public-private collaboration in modernising Ghana's energy sector. By combining First Sky Limited’s infrastructure development with GRIDCo’s transmission expertise, the project provides a blueprint for future large-scale renewable energy integrations that aim to reduce the carbon footprint of the national power supply.
