Engineer Eugene Odoi Addo, the Sunyani Area Manager of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), has issued a stern warning to electricity consumers regarding the use of illegal connections. Speaking during the company’s Customer Service Week, Odoi Addo stated that individuals caught bypassing official meters or engaging in power theft will face legal prosecution. The initiative aims to enhance the relationship between the utility provider and the community while emphasizing the importance of legal compliance in electricity usage.
During the engagement, several customers expressed concerns over the prolonged delays in the acquisition of new electricity meters, which some suggested might be driving illegal activities. In response, Engineer Odoi Addo encouraged consumers to utilize NEDCo's internal dispute resolution channels to address their frustrations. He advised that while the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) is an available resource for escalation, initiating complaints through the company's service desks often allows for a more immediate administrative solution.
The manager further highlighted the significant dangers that illegal connections pose to both public safety and infrastructure integrity. He explained that unauthorized wiring often leads to unstable electrical loads, which can cause devastating fires or damage expensive household appliances. Moreover, these illegal acts result in considerable revenue losses for the company, directly impacting NEDCo’s ability to maintain the power grid and expand services to new areas within the Sunyani municipality.
To mitigate these risks, NEDCo is committed to continuing its public education campaigns alongside its enforcement operations. The company intends to foster a culture of safety and responsibility by informing customers of the legal and physical risks associated with power theft. By streamlining internal processes and maintaining a firm stance on compliance, NEDCo hopes to ensure a more reliable and secure electricity supply for all residents.
