Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has officially launched the construction of a GHS 4.1 million Inland Valley project in Aninkroma, located within the Atwima Nwabiagya North District. This critical infrastructure project is being developed under the Food Systems Resilience Project (FSRP) and is designed to provide a reliable, year-round water supply to local farmers. With a projected completion timeline of 16 months, the initiative represents a significant investment in the region's agricultural capacity, aimed at mitigating the impacts of seasonal rainfall variability and ensuring the sustainability of local food systems.
The project is specifically engineered to address water scarcity challenges that have historically limited agricultural productivity in the inland valley regions of the Ashanti Region. By establishing a sustainable irrigation system, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture expects to enhance food security and improve the livelihoods of hundreds of smallholder farmers. During the sod-cutting ceremony, Minister Opoku emphasized that this infrastructure is a cornerstone of the government's strategy to move toward more resilient and modernized farming practices. He noted that the ability to cultivate crops throughout the year, regardless of the weather, is essential for maintaining a stable food supply for the nation.
In addition to the infrastructural development, the Minister took the opportunity to announce revamped incentives for the 2026 National Best Farmer awards. He revealed that the ultimate winner would receive substantial prizes, including a new vehicle and a tractor, as part of the government’s commitment to rewarding excellence in the sector. Minister Opoku further issued a clarion call to the Ghanaian youth, urging them to view agriculture not as a subsistence activity but as a viable and profitable career path that is vital for national economic growth and professional development.
Local leadership has welcomed the initiative with high expectations for the district's economic future. The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Atwima Nwabiagya North, Mr. Mba Zechariah Alenbilla, expressed his optimism that the project would transform the district into a major agricultural hub. Similarly, the local traditional leader, Nana Gyedu Kumanin IV, praised the government for its foresight in bringing such a capital-intensive project to Aninkroma. As construction begins, the successful implementation of this inland valley project is expected to serve as a blueprint for similar climate-resilient infrastructure developments across the country under the FSRP framework.
