The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced a new operational strategy in the Ashanti Region to restrict planned maintenance outages to a maximum of two days per week. This initiative, designed to bolster network reliability and enhance customer satisfaction, marks a significant shift in how the utility provider manages its infrastructure upgrades and routine repairs across the region. The move comes as part of a broader effort to provide more predictable and stable electricity supply to both domestic and commercial consumers.
General Manager for the region, Ing. Kofi Apau Ohenese, explained that the new approach focuses on isolating specific sections of the distribution network for necessary repairs rather than implementing widespread shutdowns. By targeting localized segments, the company aims to minimize the impact on the broader consumer base. This targeted maintenance is also intended to extend the lifespan of critical network equipment, ensuring that the electrical infrastructure remains robust and efficient through more systematic and less disruptive servicing.
While the two-day limit applies strictly to planned maintenance, ECG clarified that emergency faults remain exempt from this schedule. In instances where unforeseen technical failures occur, such as those caused by weather or equipment malfunction, the company will still require immediate access to the network to carry out emergency repairs. This distinction ensures that while routine work is streamlined to benefit consumers, the utility's responsiveness to sudden breakdowns is not compromised.
The introduction of this schedule is a key component of ECG’s commitment to improving the quality of electricity provision in the Ashanti Region. By aligning maintenance activities with consumer needs for consistent power, the utility aims to reduce the frustration often associated with frequent or unpredictable outages. Moving forward, the company intends to monitor the effectiveness of these measures as it continues to upgrade its network capacity and overall service delivery standards.
