A major fire outbreak at a commercial site in Darkuman, Accra, caused extensive property damage on Monday, October 19, 2026. The blaze, which erupted in the Attico area near Cable and Wireless, destroyed nine shipping containers, approximately 30 wooden structures, and five vehicles. Despite the scale of the destruction at the commercial hub, authorities confirmed that no injuries or fatalities were recorded during the incident.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded to the emergency after the Dansoman Fire Station received a distress call at approximately 2:40 p.m. Firefighting teams were dispatched immediately, arriving at the scene by 3:01 p.m. Through their coordinated efforts, the crews managed to bring the intense fire under control by 3:51 p.m., preventing the flames from spreading to nearby residential and commercial properties. The operation continued for several hours until the fire was fully extinguished at 6:37 p.m.
Among the significant losses reported were five Bihatsu high-jet vehicles, locally known as "Abossey Okai machos." The destruction of the containers and wooden structures represents a substantial economic blow to the local business owners operating at the site. The GNFS has initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the outbreak, and officials are expected to provide further updates once the assessment is complete.
