Angry residents at the High Tension area of Kasoa in the Central Region attacked personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) with stones following a fire outbreak that destroyed 15 container shops. The residents expressed fury over what they perceived as a delayed response from the fire department, which allowed the blaze to spread rapidly through the commercial structures. The attack occurred as the firefighters arrived at the scene to begin their operations, highlighting a growing trend of public hostility toward emergency responders during crisis situations.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service, the delay in responding to the Kasoa blaze was not intentional but was the result of significant equipment challenges. Officials revealed that fire tenders at the nearest local stations were broken or undergoing repairs at the time the emergency call was received. This logistical failure forced the department to dispatch units from more distant stations, resulting in a critical loss of time while the fire ravaged the shops and their contents.
Shadrach Boakye Yiadom, the local Assemblyman, condemned the violence directed at the firefighters, emphasizing that such actions only hinder emergency efforts and endanger lives. He noted that while the residents’ frustration was understandable given the significant loss of property, attacking the personnel who eventually arrived to help was counterproductive. The Assemblyman called for urgent government intervention to repair fire service equipment and ensure that local stations are adequately prepared for future emergencies.
Preliminary investigations by the fire service suggest that the blaze was likely caused by an electrical fault within one of the containers. The incident has once again brought to the fore concerns regarding congestion in commercial hubs and the lack of proper fire safety measures in temporary structures. Authorities are expected to conduct a full assessment of the damage and continue their investigation into both the cause of the fire and the subsequent assault on the fire crew.
