A major fire outbreak at the Attico commercial site in Darkuman, Accra, has resulted in the destruction of nine containers, 30 wooden structures, and five vehicles. The incident, which occurred on Monday, October 19, 2026, at the Cable and Wireless area, caused significant property damage but fortunately resulted in no reported casualties or injuries.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded to the emergency after receiving an alert at the Dansoman Fire Station at approximately 2:40 p.m. Firefighting crews arrived at the scene by 3:01 p.m. and worked to contain the blaze. Through their coordinated efforts, the fire was brought under control by 3:51 p.m., though personnel remained on-site until 6:37 p.m. to ensure the flames were fully extinguished and the area was safe.
Among the items lost in the inferno were five Bihatsu high-jet vehicles, popularly known in the local automotive market as "Abossey Okai machos." The destruction of the nine metal containers and numerous wooden structures represents a substantial economic blow to the local traders who operate within the commercial enclave. The density of the structures in the area posed a challenge, yet the swift intervention of the firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to neighboring properties.
The cause of the fire remains unknown and is currently under investigation by the GNFS. Fire investigators are expected to conduct a thorough assessment of the site to identify the point of origin and determine if electrical faults or other hazards triggered the outbreak. Traders and residents in the Darkuman community have been urged to remain cautious and adhere to fire safety protocols to prevent future occurrences in the busy commercial district.
