The Bono Regional Office of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has secured GH₵47,057.78 in billing adjustments for consumers during the third quarter of 2026. This intervention follows various complaints lodged by utility users against the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) and Ghana Water Limited (GWL) regarding billing inaccuracies and service delivery issues in the region. This regulatory action underscores the commission's commitment to protecting consumer rights and ensuring fair billing practices across the utility sector.
Out of the total adjustment amount, GH₵41,925.51 was credited to customers of Ghana Water Limited, while GH₵5,132.27 was adjusted for those served by NEDCo. Beyond individual billing corrections, the commission's regulatory oversight also assisted Ghana Water Limited in a significant revenue recovery exercise, which saw the utility provider recoup GH₵164,249.82 from delinquent accounts and resolve outstanding payment disputes. These financial corrections are essential for maintaining the integrity of the billing systems and building trust between the providers and the public.
Alongside financial adjustments, the PURC oversaw critical infrastructure improvements to enhance service reliability across the Bono Region. A total of 23 transformers were upgraded, directly improving power capacity for over 4,178 customers who had previously experienced frequent outages or low voltage. Furthermore, the commission facilitated the replacement of 118 damaged or aged electricity poles, a move aimed at bolstering the safety and stability of the regional distribution network. These technical interventions are designed to address the root causes of service interruptions.
These activities form part of the PURC’s broader mandate to protect consumer interests while ensuring the financial viability of utility providers. By resolving billing disputes and pushing for infrastructure upgrades, the regional office aims to foster better relations between service providers and the public. Moving forward, the PURC encouraged consumers to report service irregularities and billing discrepancies promptly to ensure timely interventions and improved service quality in the region.
