The Black Star Experience Secretariat has officially launched the maiden edition of the Black Star Comedy Experience (BSCE), themed "You’re Ghana Laugh." Announced at Jubilee House in Accra, this initiative is strategically timed to coincide with Ghana’s upcoming 70th Independence Anniversary celebrations. Set to take place on January 2, 2027, the event represents a major push to integrate live comedy into the national fabric of entertainment while celebrating Ghana's cultural identity on a grand stage. The program seeks to foster a vibrant exchange between Ghanaian and international comedy scenes, making live performances a cornerstone of the nation's entertainment landscape.
Rex Owusu Marfo, Coordinator of the Black Star Experience Secretariat, emphasized that the initiative is designed to address long-standing challenges in the comedy sector, such as insufficient infrastructure and limited market access. By providing a professional platform for live performances, high-quality recordings, and digital distribution, the BSCE aims to transform comedic talent into a sustainable and viable creative industry. Marfo highlighted that the project is not merely about laughter but about building business structures that allow Ghanaian comedians to build professional careers and contribute meaningfully to the national economy.
The inaugural showcase will feature a powerhouse mix of domestic and international talent, including renowned Ghanaian comedians OB Amponsah and Lekzy DeComic, alongside UK-based stars such as Eddie Kadi. This cross-border collaboration is intended to bridge the gap between the Ghanaian, Nigerian, and UK comedy circuits. Organizers have expressed a commitment to leveraging this momentum to export Ghanaian comedy to the world, with plans already in motion to expand the experience to international markets, beginning with the United Kingdom through the engagement of professional booking agents.
Beyond the immediate entertainment value, the Black Star Comedy Experience is being framed as a vital component of the creative economy that will generate job opportunities and enhance Ghana’s global cultural brand. Marfo issued a call for increased government and corporate backing, stressing that a robust partnership between the public and private sectors is essential for the industry's long-term growth. As the nation prepares for its 70th-anniversary milestone, this initiative seeks to ensure that the creative arts remain at the heart of both the national celebration and the country's broader economic development strategy.
