Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, a senior aide to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, has alleged that fellow inmates attempted to poison the politician while in custody. The disclosure was made on October 27, coinciding with Boasiako's 100th day in prison. The matter is reportedly under investigation by prison authorities, though specific details regarding the motive or the substances involved have not yet been made public.
The alleged incident was brought to light during a recent court appearance related to Boasiako's ongoing legal challenges. Despite the seriousness of the claim, his aide assured the public that the chairman, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, remains in stable health and good spirits. However, it was noted that there are currently no medical reports that formally confirm the poisoning attempt, as the internal investigation is still in its early stages.
Boasiako is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence following a conviction for illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as galamsey. His legal team is actively appealing the verdict. Amidst these security concerns, Boakye-Danquah stated that the chairman has called for significant prison reforms, emphasizing the need for better inmate welfare and more robust rehabilitation programs within the correctional system.
The prison authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the security breach or the progress of their internal inquiry. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and supervision of high-profile inmates within the country's penal facilities as Boasiako continues his efforts to overturn his conviction through the appellate process.
